Summary

Kafka wants to clean up kaiju, but not literally! Will a sudden metamorphosis stand in the way of his dream?

With the highest kaiju-emergence rates in the world, Japan is no stranger to attack by deadly monsters。 Enter the Japan Defense Force, a military organization tasked with the neutralization of kaiju。 Kafka Hibino, a kaiju-corpse cleanup man, has always dreamed of joining the force。 But when he gets another shot at achieving his childhood dream, he undergoes an unexpected transformation。 How can he fight kaiju now that he’s become one himself?!

Kafka manages to fight off the humanoid kaiju, rescuing Iharu and Reno。 But before he can change back to his human form, Kafka’s spotted by Defense Force officers, and the neutralization unit—led by none other than Vice-Captain Hoshina himself—is dispatched to dispose of him。 Can Kafka withstand his superior officer’s attacks without revealing his true identity?!

GASSED。There isn't much to say about a serialization because one always leads to the next, but this volume doesn't minimize the momentum of the story's pace。 It all feels well placed, the story comfortably linear (meaning that everything that happens makes sense for the story and plot), with the characters。The only thing I would say is sometimes the plot moves TOO fast, with no time to stop and develop the characters or focus on their skills, even as they grow physically and mentally。 It is more GASSED。There isn't much to say about a serialization because one always leads to the next, but this volume doesn't minimize the momentum of the story's pace。 It all feels well placed, the story comfortably linear (meaning that everything that happens makes sense for the story and plot), with the characters。The only thing I would say is sometimes the plot moves TOO fast, with no time to stop and develop the characters or focus on their skills, even as they grow physically and mentally。 It is more story-based pacing which does work for it, so I'm not too mad。I can't talk about the character design and art style in every review (consistently excellent)。 Still, I love reading the fight scenes because it displays the talent of the mangaka and assistants in crafting a good shounen。If I had to recommend a manga or a good shounen of late, it would be this one。Thank you VIZ Media for the eARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

High stakes, fast paced fight scenes and creatively drawn monsters collaborate to bring (arguably) the best entry so far。 Effortlessly awesome, Matsumato maximises the magnificent and brings another banger of a volume to the table。

This didn't have me quite as hooked as the previous volume, but I'm still enjoying this。 We wrap up the fight against the humanoid kaiju in this volume, as well as getting to see Hoshina in action and the beginning of an aerial attack against the base。 I do wish the age difference between Kafka and the rest of the new officers was distinguished a little more - he's in his thirties but he acts like the stereotypical shounen protagonist, and I wanted a little more from this than that。 Still, it's This didn't have me quite as hooked as the previous volume, but I'm still enjoying this。 We wrap up the fight against the humanoid kaiju in this volume, as well as getting to see Hoshina in action and the beginning of an aerial attack against the base。 I do wish the age difference between Kafka and the rest of the new officers was distinguished a little more - he's in his thirties but he acts like the stereotypical shounen protagonist, and I wanted a little more from this than that。 Still, it's definitely fun, with a lot of action and intrigue due to the mysterious nature of the kaiju。 。。。more

。。。more

Raid on Tachikawa arc has got to be my favorite arc so far!I love how brainy Kafka is, here, in exchange for not being that strong enough (without using Kaiju no。 8) I can't stop calling him Taiju in my mind! His face just reminds me of him so much, although they certainly are nothing alike! If you know what I mean, haha!Anyway, again the action-packed Raid on Tachikawa arc! I love that we can finally see Hoshina's full-full potential—versus Monster no。 9! I just love Shinomiya's character so much! I can't say more about Mina since I only hang out with her for like a panel or two in each chapter even though we already are aware of her full potential (a sickeningly strong woman!) but yuh, I need to see her more。 I can't decide yet how her character will play in the series—a friend, a lover, or maybe even a villain against Kafka, kinda like Makima? Augh! Please, no。 (I'm afraid of that idea! But I mean, she sounds so hateful towards monsters esp。 what happened with their village back then) but, ugh。This volume had me on the edge of my fricken seat! I can't wait to read the continuation in volume! But the celebration chapter is a funny, chaotic but refreshing one tho—to wash away all drops of blood and monster carcasses。 AND AGAIN! I ADORE KAFKA AND ICHIKAWA'S FRIENDSHIP—PLUS THEM BEING TRIOS WITH EITHER SHINOMIYA OR IHARU! 。。。more

Not me thinking Vice Commander Hoshina was a girl for 18 freaking chaptersI really like how faced paced this is。 It's just on to the next big fight in every couple of episodes。 At the same time it could possibly get draining so I hope there's room for us to catch our breaths too like they did with the celebratory dinner。 Not me thinking Vice Commander Hoshina was a girl for 18 freaking chaptersI really like how faced paced this is。 It's just on to the next big fight in every couple of episodes。 At the same time it could possibly get draining so I hope there's room for us to catch our breaths too like they did with the celebratory dinner。 。。。more

10/10 starsNow we're talking! The plot thickens, the stakes are up, and the levels of destruction are going through the roof! But amidst this all, it's still a very personal journey for Kafka Hibino。I love the monster designs, with strong influences from both Godzilla and Hieronymus Bosch, and I also very much appreciate how Matsumoto takes time between the dynamic battles to develop the side characters and villains。All in all, Kaijuu no 8 shapes up to be my next favorite shonen :)。 10/10 starsNow we're talking!
